Bartell's Backroads Special: California Grown

How well do you know what happens to food before it shows up in the supermarket? This special edition of Bartell's Backroads takes a look at just a few of the hundreds of different crops and livestock that California farmers raise to feed and clothe the Golden State... and people across the entire country.

According to the California Department of Food & Agriculture, California farmers took in nearly $50 billion in 2017. That makes the Golden State number one in the country in terms of value.

Some of our top crops include grapes, almonds, lettuce, and tomatoes. California orchards produce more citrus than any other state, including Florida. And our happy cows are responsible for over $6.5 billion in milk alone. That’s a lot of moo juice.

In this special, "California Grown," John Bartell hits the backroads of NorCal and drops in on local farmers to see how they work their brand of food magic. Visit a yak ranch, a fish farm, and find out where the very first orange tree in California is located. And yes, that tree is still producing, over 160 years after it was first planted and became the inspiration for the entire citrus industry in our state.
