Ahead of Trump's first visit to California Tuesday as president, here are all the ways California elected officials are taking on the Trump administration and vice versa.
1. California’s so-called “sanctuary state” law took effect Jan. 1. It restricts state and local police officers from helping federal authorities with immigration enforcement.
2. In California Governor Jerry Brown’s first State of the State Address under President Donald Trump, Brown said California is not “turning back” and will defend everyone.
3. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra reminded undocumented immigrants that they still have rights in response to rumored ICE raids.
4. A new California law protects tenants from having their landlord threaten to call ICE on them.
5. President Trump said he's "thinking about" removing ICE from California.
6. Becerra said that the Trump administration's request to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census is "illegal."
7. U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions wants local federal prosecutors to pursue the “most serious crimes,” which could roll back sentencing reform made in California.
8. Becerra sued the Trump Administration over allowing employers to opt out of providing birth control for moral/religious reasons.
9. ICE cites the Trump administration in enforcing immigration arrests, which are up across Northern California.
10. Becerra is challenging the federal Bureau of Land Management's rollback of the rule that requires drilling companies to disclose what chemicals they've used for fracking.
11. Trump threatened to prevent construction of a border wall in California that the state sued to stop.
12. After Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Paris climate accord, China and California signed an agreement to work together on reducing emissions. Brown held a closed-door meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, during which the two pledged to expand trade between California and China with an emphasis on so-called green technologies.
13. The California State Lands Commission pushed the Trump administration to leave California out of plans to expand offshore drilling.
14. California and 16 other states filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its plans to scrap standards for gas mileage standards and how much greenhouse gases vehicles can emit.
