Large scale search efforts for missing journalist David Johnson suspended

Deputies had been searching daily for Johnson since his motorcycle was found at Big Bar River Access on June 7.

CALAVERAS COUNTY, Calif. — The large scale efforts that had 100 people searching for missing journalist David Johnson were suspended by the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office.

The search efforts had been focused on the Mokelumne River Canyon between the Electra Hydro Power Plant and the Pardee Reservoir.

Before Saturday's search, authorities said the reservoir had been searched with boats and specially trained dogs. A part of Highway 49 was also reduced to one lane during to make sure the road and embankment searches were thorough.

Deputies believe a "selfie" photo, which was taken near a small creek that flows into the Mokelumne River and sent to a friend, was Johnson's last known contact. K9's indicated that Johnson's scent went from the location of the photo toward the river's edge.

Authorities also found clothes and motorcycle riding gear between the location of the photo and the river's edge. A wallet, electronics, and a camera that belonged to Johnson were also found in the area.

Deputies had been searching daily for Johnson since his motorcycle was found at Big Bar River in working condition and with keys in the ignition on June 7.
