Roseville police Facebook post about parking ordinances sparks conversation among residents

Clearing up the confusion about Roseville's parking restrictions, police say the municipal code isn't as confusing as it sounds.

ROSEVILLE, Calif. — Every Monday, the Roseville Police Department post to its Facebook page something they call "Municipal Monday." The post highlights various municipal codes for the city of Roseville on the department's Facebook page.

This past Monday's code garnered some attention on social media.

Roseville municipal code 11.20.020 states vehicles parked on city streets must be moved at least one half mile every 72 hours or risk being towed.

A representative for the Roseville Police Department says that code is enforced for your own good.

"Vehicles parked on the streets really provides several challenges for us," Rob Baquera, Roseville Police Department public information officer, said. "It creates visual problems for kids and families who are trying to move up and down the street. This makes it much more dangerous for people to travel on the streets, not being able to see around large, recreational vehicles."

So here's how it works: If a vehicle has been reported to the police for being left on a street for more than 72 hours, an officer will go over and mark the vehicle. From then, the countdown starts. If the vehicle does not move in the next 72 hours, the owner of the vehicle will receive a warning violation. After the warning, if the car is still not moved, then the owner can be cited and potentially towed. The citation fine is $112.50.

For those who may be going on vacation and parking at their car at a friend's house, here's some tips to avoid a potential fine.

"First and foremost, try to park it in that neighbor's driveway so that it's not impacting the public street," Baquera said. "Secondary to that, look at alternative options, like ridesharing to that neighbor's house. Or look at other long-term parking areas in town."

There's roughly 140,000 people living in Roseville, and according to Roseville police, this municipal code needs to be enforced for quality of life.
