Oldest Catholic bishop in United States dies at 97

Bishop Emeritus Francis Quinn was the seventh bishop of Sacramento and a beloved figure in the community.

The oldest Catholic bishop in the United States, a longtime member of the Sacramento community, passed away at 97 Thursday.

Reverend Jaime Soto, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Sacramento, said being the oldest in the U.S. was a status that Bishop Emeritus Francis Quinn enjoyed sharing with many who visited him.

Quinn served as a priest for 73 years of his life — 41 of which he served as bishop.

“Bishop Quinn was also dearly possessed by the many who admired and loved him, Catholics and non-Catholics alike. He was always accompanied by friends and family throughout his long stay at Mercy McMahon," Rev. Soto said. "I am grateful to all those who were his companions during the final part of his sojourn."

The Diocese of Sacramento serves over 1 million Catholics in 20 counties covering 42,000 square miles of Northern California from San Francisco Bay to Sacramento and the Oregon border.  It includes more than 100 parishes.
