Plant Parenthood: Indoor plant trend gives local nurseries boost in business

There are a growing number of people that have developed an affinity for indoor plants; so-called "Plant Parents." It's a trend that, in turn, is boosting business at local nurseries.

ELK GROVE, Calif. — Kayli Sessions is the House Plant Buyer at Green Acres Nursery in Elk Grove. She's also a self-professed "plant parent."

"I have nearly 50 house plants," Sessions said while on the job Wednesday night, "and I love each and every one of them."

Sessions is part of a growing number of people — thanks to the influence of social media sites like Instagram and Pinterest — that have developed an affinity for indoor plants. It's a trend that, in turn, is boosting business at local nurseries.

"It's close to doubled since last year. Like, [since] one year ago, our house plant sales have doubled," Sessions said. "It's crazy. It's skyrocketing."

Sessions said Green Acres in Elk Grove has had to add additional staff on the weekends to keep up with the demand and number of customers seeking indoor plants.

"It's that busy," she said. "There's that many people coming in, having questions, wanting to talk, troubleshooting."

Plant Foundry in Oak Park has also noticed an increase in house plant sales and that they stock up for the weekends when most people shop. Those who have latched on to the trend call themselves "plant parents" and post the hashtag #plantparent on Instagram.

Sessions said customers will now come into the store looking for certain plants they saw on the social media site.

"Their favorite plant parent posted about a specific plant," she said. "And they fell in love."
