Suspect arrested for attempted murder after firing officer's weapon in the air

At the corner of 39th Street and H Street, the suspect grabbed an officer's firearm while being detained and discharged the gun several times in the air.

A suspect has been arrested for attempted murder after discharging a police officer's firearm several times as he was being detained in Sacramento, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

At approximately 11 a.m., officers with the Sacramento Police Department responded to the area of 36 Street and Elvis Street regarding a disturbance involving a Hispanic suspect with a knife. The suspect was quickly detained and transported to Mercy Hospital for mental health evaluation, according to police.

While at the hospital, the suspect ran out and a foot pursuit ensued. At the corner of 39th Street and H Street, the suspect grabbed an officer’s firearm during a violent struggle and discharged the gun several times.

An off-duty firefighter saw the officer struggling with the suspect and stopped to assist the officer. With the assistance of the firefighter, the officer, who suffered minor injuries, was able to regain control of his weapon and safely take the suspect into custody.

The suspect, upon being released from the hospital, will be charged with attempted homicide on a peace officer, police said.
