UPDATED: What now for California DACA recipients?

What does the latest U.S. Supreme Court news mean for Dreamers?

UPDATED FEB 26, 2018 — The U.S. Supreme Court deciding Monday not to review a key DACA case means DACA renewals remain open until another court ruling says otherwise.

There was a March 5, 2018, deadline by President Trump to come up with a legislative fix to the program.

"New DACA applications still will not be accepted," University of California, Davis Law School Dean and immigration expert Kevin Johnson told ABC10. "Consequently, Congress still will be pressured to act to provide some kind of DACA program."

The ongoing DACA lawsuit, which involves Attorney General Xavier Becerra, now heads to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The high court, however, could still agree to hear the case down the line.

Is DACA here to stay?

A federal court in California issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday over the Obama-era program, which gives almost 800,000 immigrants temporary protection status.

This means existing DACA recipients can renew their status -- as long as the lawsuit remains in limbo.

But what's next for the program?

A U.S. Supreme Court ruling is possible, according to University of California, Davis Law School Dean Kevin Johnson.

"I do think this is a case the Supreme Court is likely to end up reviewing," said Johnson. "The case is far from over."
