Stagg HS students hold walkout promoting gun violence awareness

About 500 students gathered on the school football field to listen to 17 students speak out on 17 reasons why changes need to occur to combat gun violence.

One by one students at Stockton's Stagg High School walked out of class just before 10 a.m., in a show of solidarity against gun violence.

"I feel like our youth is shut out to most adults and I really wanted people to know we're not going to stay silent any longer," said Sara Abdeltawab, the senior class president.

About 500 students gathered on the school football field to listen to 17 students speak out on 17 reasons why changes need to occur to combat gun violence.

"We wanted to bring awareness to gun violence. It's not ok. These are kids whose lives are being lost try to make change," said Tenyiah Washington, junior class president. "It may not do a lot, but it's a step in the right direction."

Students also paused 17 seconds in silence in honor of the 17 victims killed in the Parkland, Florida shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

The walkout, as the school principal and other administrators looked on, ended peacefully and all of the students who took part in the event then returned to class.

Nearly three weeks ago, close to 100 Stagg High School students left campus to protest and some allegedly threw rocks damaging some police cars. Five students were arrested for suspicion of battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.

However, on Wednesday, the Stockton Unified School District says all walkouts in their district ended peacefully.
